Second school slams closure plans

27/01/2011 @ 11:15

The Governing Body of Ysgol Pontrobert has accused Powys County Council of ‘misleading’ the public over reasons for earmarking the school for closure.

Pontrobert was one of 11 schools on a shortlist compiled by the Council which claims it the school has insufficient numbers to justify its future, a claim vehemently denied by the school.

In a statement to mywelshpool, the school said: “In response to the announcement made in the media, the Governing Body of Ysgol Pontrobert wish to correct the incorrect and misleading information quoted.

“The projected pupil numbers fall at no time in the next three years below 30 which appears to be the criteria for closure. Since we as a school do not fall into this bracket, to be included in such a list, is wrong.

“The manner of this disclosure was completely unsatisfactory. Only a phone call and nothing in writing, ahead of publication – giving inadequate opportunity to advise staff, parents and members of the governing body before being informed through the media.”

Yesterday, angry governors from Castle Caereinion vowed to fight the Council’s decision to add it to the list which was released last week. The Council expects to meet senior officials from the 11 schools before the summer break.
