Go-ahead for new garage and store at Buttington Cross

A new application to open a petrol station with a convenience store and offices at Buttington Cross has won the backing of Powys County Council planners.

Last year Welshpool Town Council opposed the plans by Tuffins and they were withdrawn following presentation to Powys County Council and earlier this year the town authority objected again because they scheme is on land designated for industrial use and outside the shopping zone set out in the town shopping zone plan .

Now it has emerged that Powys County Council has given consent based on the developers carrying out several conditions before work is allowed to start.

A bio-security risk assessment has been ordered along with a pollution prevention plan, a landscaping agreement and the approval of a scheme to provide underground tanks.

Welshpool Town Council claims the site is earmarked as an industrial zone and for business use only and not for retail.

The shopping zone was set up to avoid any out-of-town developments taking trade from the town centre, but it exempts Coed y Dinas and the Old Station building.
