Welshpool Liberal Democrats have chosen Folkert Veenstra as their candidate for the Welshpool Town Council by-election in Castle ward.

Folkert said: “I’m standing for election to the town council in Castle ward caused by the sad death of Ann Holloway. I am doing so because I want to play my part in making Welshpool a clean and attractive town.

“There are many people in Welshpool, like me, who use a wheelchair. People may have seen me in my powerchair around Oldford and the town centre.

“There are some problems with our streets which able bodied people may not notice, but they make life much more difficult for people like me, or elderly people, people with pushchairs and the visually impaired.

“I am talking about our pavements. It’s not just uneven pavements but poorly positioned dropped kerbs, or dropped kerbs missing completely. I want to see more done to make our streets safe and easy to get about for everyone.

“Developing a disability over the last few years has made me see things from a different perspective. It’s made be more assertive in getting things done, for myself and for other people, and made me more able to tackle difficult decisions.

“I hope I may have the opportunity to contribute to the future of Welshpool as a town councillor.”
