Berriew could go top at Maesydre

Former Welshpool Town manager Dave Jones brings his high-flying Berriew side to The Maesydre tonight looking to go top of the Spar Mid Wales League.

Jones, who was controversially sacked by Welshpool, heaped praise on his village side ahead of tonight’s game.

“The lads have done exceptionally well this season and we are well on track for a top six finish which was the aim at the start of the season,” said Jones.

Berriew are on a 13 game unbeaten run which stretches back to September 10 and have propelled themselves into the title race. A win tonight will take them above Rhayader at the top.

“It’s going to be a very tough game tonight. It’s a local derby and Chris Roberts and Neil Pryce have made things more solid since taking over at Welshpool. We will need to maintain the performance levels we have been producing over the last few months.”

Pool have selection problems with joint boss Chris Roberts also frustrated by international clearance rules in a bid to sign new players.

“We are expecting a tough game tonight,” he said. “Berriew are probably the best footballing side in the league. We have a few out injured and have a couple of new signings awaiting international clearance.

“We are going to need to dig in deep for a few weeks until we get our full squad in place and trust our youngsters to carry on the fight.

Llanfair will fancy their chances of making further progress in the JD Welsh Cup competition when they entertain Corwen while Guilsfield go to Greenfield on Deeside.
