Lib Dems call for Post Office protection

31/01/2011 @ 02:41

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Wyn Williams is backing plans that will ensure Post Offices are protected from closure.

The party claims that Labour axed more than 5,000 Post Offices during their 13 years in power, and says many other local branches are struggling to survive due to a lack of funding.

In contrast, the Lib Dems have committed to spending £1.3 billion over the next four years on modernising and improving Post Offices, more than double the amount invested by Labour.

Mr Williams, the Lib Dem Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire, explained: "Thanks to the Lib Dems, Post Offices will have shorter queues and longer opening hours. Most importantly there will be no repeat of the disastrous closure programmes that happened when Labour were in charge.

"Labour stripped the heart out of thousands of communities by forcing their Post Offices to close. They just picked up where the Tories left off.

"Only the Lib Dems are committed to a national Post Office network. Only because the Lib Dems are in government is your local Post Office safe."
