Welshpool Windfarm Protest

10/08/2010 @ 05:31

Residents from Welshpool and its surrounding area are being urged to attend a town centre protest against the proposed Tirgwynt Wind Farm this Thursday, but it could be too little too late.

Powys planners are meeting in Welshpool to discuss the proposed site near Carno which will have repercussions for Welshpool due to the volume of convoys required to transport the massive turbines through Mid Wales.

Protesters believe the thousands of lorries will cause a traffic nightmare and have a detrimental effect on the town's ancient buildings. But planning officials are approving the plans, subject to conditions, so the windfarm is expected to be rubber stamped.

Town Mayor Estelle Bleivas is leading the call for protest support.

“We believe – and the public backed us at a public meeting – that this will cause a huge amount of damage to the tourist industry not to mention the damage it could cause to the town’s buildings and infrastructure,” she said.

The protest will take place at 1.30pm, Thursday, outside the Neuadd Maldwyn offices in Severn Street where the Powys County Planning Committee will consider the application made by Awel Newydd, for the construction of 12 wind turbine generators.
