New Year fly tip shocker

It wasn’t the New Year stroll that one dog walker expected, but it has highlighted the growing problem we are facing due to fly tippers.

The disgraceful scene (pictured) greeted Welshpool man Nev Pugh who was stretching his legs across Long Mountain following a busy New Year’s weekend.

“Go for a nice walk in the countryside and you come across this,” he said. “Potters Recycling Yard in town is easier to get to than here and they will take anything. It is disgraceful.”

Sadly, Nev said that it is not the first time and the fly tippers are wise by burning any paper rubbish that could incriminate them.

“It’s up a little drive near the top of the road from Leighton going towards the Beacon Ring,” he added. “It’s about 300 yards from the main road so they have to go out of their way to dump it.”

Reports of fly tipping have been on the rise in the Welshpool area since Powys County Council reduced its collections. It also highlights the farcical proposal that threatens the future of the Potters Recycling Yard in the town.

Late last year, Welshpool Town Council took on the role of street cleaning and emptying the local public bins in the town from Powys.
