Residents and organisations contacting Powys County Council in an out-of-hours emergency now have a choice of telephone numbers.
For enquiries about services such as highways, housing repairs, refuse, and environmental health there is a choice of both local code (01597) and 0845 numbers. This has recently been extended to emergency out-of-hours calls. The choice is given to offer callers the most cost effective number depending on their individual call plan.
Adding call options for the emergency line, as well as highlighting the choices available, is a direct action from the council’s anti-poverty work.
Councillor Joy Jones, Powys County Council’s Anti-Poverty Champion, said: “I was made aware that some people incur higher charges for 0845 numbers, particularly if calling from mobile phones. So I am pleased that, as a result of raising this through my anti-poverty champion role, this was looked at and change has happened. As a result those who need help, particularly in an urgent situation, can do so without incurring additional charges.”
