Powys County Council has moved quickly to quell a growing concern that the town is set to lose a large chunk of its sports facilities.

Last month the council agreed to build a new super school on the Salop Road fields which are currently used for sports activity both in and out of school time.

This week there has been a lot of concern raised on Facebook about the loss of these fields to development, but the council has said that it is being addressed as part of the development process.

Cabinet Member for Schools, Councillor Arwel Jones, told us: “The county council will be working closely with the high school and Freedom Leisure, who manage the Flash Leisure Centre, to mitigate against any potential loss of sports use from the building of the new primary school.”

All of the town’s four primary and nursery schools will eventually be closed and replaced by two new facilities, with a Welsh school based at Maesydre and the English one based on Salop Road fields. It is believed to involve an investment of around £13 million.
