They must be off their trolleys!

Yesterday the town applauded the efforts of the local canoe club after we revealed that they had retrieved 10 bags of rubbish from the canal, not to mention a shopping trolley!

But it seems one trolley was merely scratching the surface, so to speak, after a volunteer with a charity that operates trips on the canal revealed that it happens quite often.

The volunteer, who asked not to be named, helps the Heulwen Trust and said the town lock seems to be “convenient for yobs to have fun with trolleys”.

“The worst place is in the town lock although they can be found elsewhere,” she said. “It takes some time for us to lean over the side of the lock and try to hook up the trolley with our boat hook and very inconvenient for all concerned.

“Well done to the team of canoeists - a job achieved! However, this is a fairly frequent occurrence for the skippers and crews of the Heulwen Trust trip boats and cause long delays at the lock.

“If the trolleys are in the lock, it means we have to wait outside until the offending article is removed before we are able to prepare the lock.

“In turn, this delays the passengers, leading to delay in the next set of passengers being able to enjoy their trip.”

Yesterday a number of readers called on supermarket Morrisons, located next to the canal, to pay closer attention to where their trolleys end up.
