An oak tree in a Welshpool cemetery that was felled last year on safety grounds is now home to a new young oak tree.

Powys County Council arranged for the young oak tree to be planted in the hollow of the stump of the old oak tree at Maesgwastad Cemetery in Welshpool.

The young oak tree was replanted on Tuesday by local tree surgeons Arbserv Ltd.

The old oak tree in the middle of the cemetery was felled in October 2016 after a survey found that the amount of live wood found in the trunk was below safety limits.

Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Cemeteries, said: “The old oak tree was a prominent landmark within the cemetery so the decision to fell it was not taken lightly.

“Although we were not able to preserve the old tree, it is only right that we planted an oak sapling as a replacement.  Over time, the oak tree will again become prominent landmark within Maesgwastad Cemetery.”
