Flying trade at market

Welshpool Livestock Sales report a flying trade at the March store cattle fair on Tuesday.

Buyers from far and wide, including regular and new buyers, helped to keep a solid and strong trade throughout the sale. Bunched of cattle sold exceptionally well. Steers averaged 230.56ppkg or £990.05 per head and heifers averaged 221.25ppkg or £906.73.

Leading the way with top price per head were;

A much smaller entry of otms this week selling to £824.27 for an Otm British Blue cow weighing in at 593kg making £824.27 (139ppkg) from G & H Jerman, Tynyrwtra. MR Williams, Wern Holding, presented a 680kgkg Limousin cow 48 to 72 months making £795.60 (117ppkg). J A Williams, LLechwedd-Ddyrys, presented a Under 48 months Charolais heifer weighing 731kg making £1140.36 (156ppkg). DW & SE Richards, Rhallt Farm, presented a 598kg Limousin 31months old heifer making £950.82(159ppkg.)

Otm Cows (x2) averaged 129.06ppkg / £802.14.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x3) averaged 113.35ppkg / £754.51.

Heifers under 48 months (x4) averaged 153.55ppkg / £989.98.

Steers under 48 months (x1) averaged 148ppkg.

Bulls under 72 months (x1) 122ppkg.

Overall average of 134.50ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.


An entry of 4047 prime lambs sold to an average of 190.17ppkg.

Lights (193) to 199ppkg from Probert & Probert, Lower Hill. Others to 196ppkg from M Morris, Bunyions. Average of 181.90ppkg.

Standards (495) to 202ppkg from H S Davies & Sons, Yew Tree. Others to 197ppkg from RGK Hodnett, Willey House. Average of 185.63ppkg.

Mediums (1311) to  279ppkg from G Jones, Hirrhyd. Others to 262ppkg from JR, RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog. Average of 192.51ppkg

Heavies (1096) to 236ppkg & 233ppkg from JR, RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog . Others to 229ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Average of  183.69ppkg   

Over Weights (871) to 215ppkg from G James & Sons, Penybank. Others to 202ppkg from J C Evans & Co, BelanNewydd.  Average of 161.21ppkg.


Slightly bigger show of culls this week averaging £59 for ewes and £80 for rams. Topping the ewe section was DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro, making £138. W T Davies, Canllefaes Uchaf, presented ewes to £131. Rams topped at £123 also from W T Davies. A T Edwards, Glanaber, presented a ram making £113.


Smaller entry of stores sold to a top of £59 for mule tup lambs from A T Edwards, Glanaber. Mixed and clean lambs topped at £58.50 for texel x lambs from L S Philpott & Son, Birch Tree Cottage.

Theave Lambs (33) averaged £24.70.

Mixed and clean lambs (100) averaged £36.75.

Wether lambs (16) averaged £40.75.

Tup lambs (46) averaged £49.23.

Cade Lambs -  An entry of 110 cade lambs this week topping at £30 averaging £11.94.


An entry of 77 couples with the vast majority being single lambs met with a buoyant trade that peaked at £180 for 3 Texel x 2 and 3 year old ewes with twin lambs at foot from DTM Jones, Minffordd. Further twins from the same home sold for £178, £175 and £170 respectively,  with the whole run averaging £59/life. JM & EM Jones, Penrhyn Farm, sold 4 Texel as found ewes with big strong single  lambs for £140. Ryan Morris, Maestanyglwyden, sold a 2 year old Texel x ewe with a single lamb for £138.

M C Davies, Knolls farm, sold 5 Texel x 3 and 4 year olds with 9 lambs for £135.

Best single traded between £80 - £100.
