Wardens to enforce ‘Cleaner Welshpool’?

08/02/2011 @ 06:26

Welshpool is considering a street warden scheme to clamp down on anything from dog fouling to anti-social behavior.

The new scheme is to be considered by the Town Council, which has been clearly told by its residents that the priority is to clean up the town and banish troublesome behaviour.

“Our recent public consultation for the town plan has given a clear indication of where the people’s priorities lie and we must act upon their needs,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “A ‘Cleaner Welshpool’ campaign won the overwhelming backing of the people with 95 per cent of 800 participants saying they wanted to see it implemented.

“A ‘Cleaner Welshpool’ campaign would cover everything from littering, dog fouling and graffiti to trouble spots suffering from anti-social behaviour. It would even cover problems like broken paving slabs being reported for example.

“To achieve this we would require more eyes and ears so we are considering a street warden scheme for Welshpool.”

The proposal is up for discussion at the next Town Council meeting but it is believed that volunteers would be sought to feed into an action group covering the whole town.

Last year, Welshpool’s Police launched a successful clampdown on underage drinking and anti-social behaviour after listening to residents’ concerns through public meetings.
