We end week one of our month-long fitness drive with our friends at Great Fitness telling us that using weights can be a great way of toning up.

There seems to be a misconception that lifting weight means bulking up, but done properly it can also lead to toning up and losing that unwanted fat.

“Weights don’t necessarily give you that bulky look,” said Chris Greatorex of Great Fitness. “There is a general opinion it seems that doing weights provide a more masculine physique; this is not the case.

“Obviously if you’re a female and you wanted to go down that route, eventually heavier and heavier resistance would lead to that, but to give you that ‘toned’ look that is very popular, weights are the way forward.

“High numbers of repetitions using relatively low weighted exercise will help you on the way to gaining a toned figure much faster than just spending large chunks of your gym sessions on the treadmill or cross trainer.”
