Plaid Cymru has named Aled Morgan Hughes as its candidate to fight the Montgomeryshire seat at the General Election.

Aled was raised in Montgomeryshire, educated locally at Caereinion High School. He currently works as a postgraduate researcher in Welsh and Scottish politics at Cardiff University, and previously stood as Plaid Cymru's candidate for Montgomeryshire in last year's Welsh Assembly election.

He said: “Whichever way you voted in the Brexit referendum, I know for sure you didn't vote to see your family or community worse off. With discussions ongoing on the terms of Brexit, we now need to ensure Wales’ voice in Westminster is as strong as it has ever been to secure the best deal for our communities here in Montgomeryshire."

"So far, Wales and its communities have been forgotten by Westminster – we’re seeing Gibraltar given more attention. We’re facing a situation where our farmers, towns and villages here in Montgomeryshire will be worse off. It’s only Plaid Cymru that would fight for the best deal for our communities– both rural and urban."

Aled added: "Like generations of my family before me, I was raised here in Montgomeryshire. Living in the Banwy Valley, every day I see the challenges facing our communities.

“I want to be that voice for change to ensure a better future for this beautiful area. I’d oppose the damaging Tory cuts which have hurt our services and communities here in Mid Wales. Young and enthusiastic, I’d fight tooth and nail for the area – Montgomeryshire’s voice in Westminster, rather than Westminster’s voice in Montgomeryshire."

The Conservative Parliamentary Candidate is Glyn Davies and the Liberal Democrats have selected Jane Dodds.
