Housing plan a step nearer for Little Chef site

Plans to construct housing on the site of the former Little Chef in Buttington have taken a big step nearer to becoming a reality.

Two years ago we reported how the site was being earmarked for a change of use to residential, and now it appears that the developer has been given outline planning approval by Powys County Council to construct the eight two and three-bedroom semi-detached homes.

As well as building the homes, applicant Paul Delves of Delves & Co Ltd would create new access for vehicles. He has also proposed that two of the homes come under the ‘Affordable Housing’ policy.

The planning permission, granted on May 8, comes with a number of conditions but it means work can start on developing one of the area’s last remaining eye sores resulting from the credit crunch.

The council officer responsible concluded that “having considered the proposed development in the context of the development plan and national policy, it is believed that the principal of development at this location is fundamentally acceptable”.

According to Mr. Delves, the site has been marketed for “a considerable time” but there has been no interest and he explained that the properties would help meet a “shortfall” of low-cost, family homes.

In his application, he states: “With low impact on the surrounding environment and with the benefit of developing a vacant site that is only becoming more unsightly the longer it is left unoccupied, this is seen as the most obvious form of development for this particular site, particularly bearing in mind the unsuccessful attempts that have already been made to market the property with its current town planning class use.”
