21/05/2017 @ 09:20

Guilsfield will be hosting a ‘Great Get Together’ as part of a nationwide event where communities will be gathering together to remember MP Jo Cox, a year after she was murdered.

Jo’s husband Brendan said the UK-wide event, would be a “fitting tribute” to Jo who died on June 16, 2016 and the event will take place on Sunday, June 18.

"We wanted something that celebrated Jo's energy but also brought the community together," he said. "That could be picnics on your village green, street parties, shared barbecues, community bake-offs. The basic idea is to get together and have fun."

Everyone in the village and surrounding area is invited to go along to join in with this community event to will be held from 3pm onwards in the centre of the village known to locals as the square (in between the Oak pub and the Kings Head

All you need to do is take along your picnic with family and friends. There will be entertainment, cakes for sale and a raffle with all proceeds going back into the village.

There will be further information on the Guilsfield Best Kept Village Facebook page.

Mrs Cox, MP for Batley and Spen, was murdered outside her constituency office in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Mr Cox previously told BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine his late wife "loved a party" and would have been "thrilled by the idea" of people coming together on her behalf.

But he said the event also sent a strong message."The killing of Jo was a political thing designed to divide our country and split communities apart.

"As a reaction to that event, we will bring the country together en-masse."
