Welshpool won’t become a city

11/02/2011 @ 11:24

Welshpool will remain a town after the local council decided not to bid for city status.

Town and community councils across the country have been invited to bid for city status as part the queen’s 60th anniversary on the throne in 2012.

But with more pressing things tying up the town’s budget, the council has decided to give it a miss.

“It would probably end up costing us hundreds so the councilors have opted not to bid,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “Hopefully Mid Wales, somewhere like Aberystwyth, will be successful.”

However, the town has sent in its application to have its playing fields protected under a covenant with Her Majesty to mark the same celebration.
