Welshpool Town Council is planning a three-pronged litter campaign in a bid to clean up the town.
The council is proposing to launch the campaign targeting those who drop litter or do not take responsibility for cleaning up after themselves and will also call on owners and tenants to take responsibility for clearing up their own areas.
A report will be discussed by the Council Services Committee on Wednesday calling for a promotional campaign against littering and seeking business support, particularly from main road retail frontages, to sweep and keep clean areas in front of their shops.
The council also plans to make representations to both Parliament and Welsh Government over control of packaging and making such packaging litter friendly and degradable.
“The issue of litter has been highlighted and is progressively getting worse in most towns. To this end it is suggested that a litter campaign needs to be put in place to support the existing work being carried out,” Town Clerk Robert Robinson says in the report.
The current actions being taken by the Town Council include: Street scene service, litter champions; Keep Welshpool Tidy Week; dog fouling yellow painting and the provision of extra litter bins.
