Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies, is backing calls to change the name of the Welsh Assembly to the ‘Welsh Parliament’.

The power to make this name change was devolved to Cardiff Bay in the Wales Act passed by the last Parliament.

Mr Davies, who was a member of the National Assembly for Wales from 1999 until 2007, has long supported this name change.

He said: “The recently passed Wales Act has given the National Assembly for Wales (the Welsh Assembly) new powers to make laws and the responsibility to raise a wider range of taxes. It is the ‘Welsh Parliament’ in all but name. If it’s the Welsh Parliament let’s call it what it is. And let's call our Assembly Members (AMs) by the more authoritative name Welsh Parliament Members (WPMs).

“While I support an early decision to change the name, I do not think there is any rush. It's not the top priority for Welsh people, and the new name can be introduced gradually to minimise costs. But if it looks like a Parliament and acts like a Parliament, we should call it a Parliament. I've been calling it the Welsh Parliament since the Wales Bill was passed earlier this year.”
