27/06/2017 @ 08:58

Organisers of the annual Race the Train have brought the date forward to a July slot.

Normally held after the summer holidays in September, the event has steadily grown in popularity since it was reintroduced as a cycling event several years ago.

But it is hoped the July 30 date will boost its popularity further.

The event sees cyclists invited to race the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway train leaving Welshpool Raven Square at 11.15am.

The train takes 45 minutes on average to cover its eight miles whilst cyclists cover nine miles.

The route is fully marshalled with first aid points, rescue vehicle etc.

Those wishing to enter the race should be at Raven Square Station no later than 10.45am on the day of the race. Entry fee is £10.

There is water and chocolate at the end of the race at Llanfair Caereinion.

“In 2016 more cyclists beat the train than didn’t – let’s see how many can do it this year,” said a spokesperson for the orginsation which is led by Welshpool Rotary Club with Town Council support.

The route is from Raven Square, turn left up Llanfair Road to the Golfa, left into Cwm Lane, through Castle Caereinion, down past the steam railway station and left into the Dollardyn Road, keep going up the hill and then down into Llanfair, turn right into Mount Road and left by the Bowling Club, over the river bridge to the winning post at Llanfair Caereinion Station.
