Cyclists are at the ready, the annual Race the Train takes place today (Sunday) with the final details released by its organisers.

Cyclists are invited to race the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway train leaving Welshpool Raven Square at 11.05am with the Mayor of Welshpool seeing everyone on their way.

The train takes 45 minutes on average to cover its eight miles whilst cyclists cover nine miles. The route is fully marshalled with first aid points and a rescue vehicle.

Those wishing to enter the race should be at Raven Square Station no later than 10.45am on the day of the race. Entry fee is £10 and there is water and chocolate at the end of the race at Llanfair Caereinion.

The route is from Raven Square, turn left up Llanfair Road to the Golfa, left into Cwm Lane, through Castle Caereinion, down past the steam railway station and left into the Dollardyn Road, keep going up the hill and then down into Llanfair, turn right into Mount Road and left by the Bowling Club, over the river bridge to the winning post at Llanfair Caereinion Station.

In 2016 more cyclists beat the train than did not.

The event is organised by the local Rotary with support from the Town Council and all money raised will go to Rotary charities.
