A town’s war on litter begins
A group of residents have come together to launch a Keep Welshpool Tidy initiative that has already engaged with dozens of businesses and scores of residents in the town.
And this Saturday will mark the initiative’s official launch outside the Town Hall when the efforts will be promoted and more people will have the chance to stand up and be counted.
“This is a huge campaign that will tackle all aspects of the litter problem from what companies use to package their goods to simply taking responsibility for keeping areas of the town tidy,” said Councillor Heather Chave, who is one of the founders.
“We will also visit schools and clubs to talk to youngsters and educate them about the problem. It is an initiative run totally by volunteers with support from town councillors and already we are seeing a difference being made.”
More than 70 businesses have signed up to take charge of the areas outside of their shops which are normally handled by street cleaners, who are finding themselves overworked dealing with a recent rise in fly tipping caused by stricter recycling rules.
“We are having a campaign launch this Saturday from 11am-12.30pm near the Town Hall when Sylvester the Cat will be handing out leaflets and there will be volunteers present to share what we are doing and how people can get involved.
“We are hoping for more volunteers who can adopt a passage or corner to look after. There are also some free pocket ashtrays to be given away on a first come first served basis.”
Despite the strong start, the volunteers say that there are many more unkept areas and passageways that need adopting and they hope to raise some funds so that flower boxes can be purchased.
The Town Council is also supporting the initiative.
