A pat on the back for Council

They may have been forced to implement cuts to services which haven’t proved popular but Powys County Council is one of the better performing councils in Wales, according to the latest figures released by the Welsh Government.

The report, the 12th to be issued by the Local Government Data Unit, show that the county council improved or remained at the same level for 76 per cent of the comparable indicators in 2016-17 compared to 2015-16. Although there are four areas that the council performance has declined in.

The findings rank Powys as the sixth best performing council in Wales for the comparable indicators, covering areas including education, housing, transport, planning, leisure and corporate health.

Cllr Aled Davies, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Performance, said: “The annual figures are positive and we are pleased with improvements in a number of key areas. Improvements at a time of considerable pressure on public service are difficult to achieve. However, there are areas where we can do better.

“Overall the council improved or remained at the same level for 76 per cent of the comparable indicators but we recognise that performance declined in four indicators and that is something we need to understand and improve on in the coming year.

“It is pleasing to note that the council leads the way in some areas. In those areas where we do not compare well, with other councils, performance has improved compared to last year.

“Our task is to make sure the council maintains its high standards and where possible improve performance for the benefit of the residents of Powys.”
