Just 345 claiming Job Seekers

The number of those claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Montgomeryshire has dropped to 345, 70 less than the number claiming a year ago.

The Office of National Statistics showed that just 1.1% of the economically active population aged between 16-64 were now claiming, well below the UK average claimant rate of 2.5%.

There were also only 90 claimants aged 18-24 within the constituency.

Local MP Glyn Davies has described the figure as “astonishingly low” but said there is still work to be done.

“The latest unemployment statistics for Montgomeryshire are astonishingly low, and continues the hugely impressive trend which has seen employment rates within the constituency at a far higher than when I first became the MP in 2010,” he said.

“Today, Montgomeryshire is in within the top 100 constituencies out of 650 within the UK for the lowest unemployment levels. It is also pleasing that the number of claimants aged between 18-24 continues to fall, having decreased by a third from the previous month.

“Whilst there is still much to do, today’s statistics tell us that Montgomeryshire is well placed to continue to develop its employment base, and reinforces the upward trend of businesses and employers expanding within the constituency.”
