Grass contract could be cut
Earlier this year, Montgomeryshire residents raised concern about safety at road junctions due to the grass obstructing vision, as well as the state of some public areas, verges and public amenities.
In some cases, areas were left uncut for months after a new contract was awarded to a company which the council had to take to task over.
In reply to a letter sent to Powys by a Newtown councillor, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Cllr Liam Fitzpatrick, said: “Grass cutting has been one of the major issues that the new Cabinet and indeed all members have had to deal with this year and as you may recall I was rather strict with the providers of the service in June of this year – with the result that I made all the County papers and BBC Online.
“I regret nothing and I am happy to say that they seem to have listened to my demands for a much better service and across the board there has been some improvement.
“However I am currently conducting an intense review and looking at all contracts throughout all the county with a view to considering taking it back in house form March 2018.
“This would seem to be the favoured approach from residents and councillors who would like to see a return to the normal service prior to this being contracted out to other suppliers. This is my ambitious goal at this time and I look forward to making a full council announcement in the near future.”
