While Christmas is a time to celebrate and get together with friends and family, Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) is also reminding the public to stay safe throughout the festive period.

Home Safety Manager, Will Bowen said: “By being aware of the risks and taking a few precautions you can ensure that you and your loved ones can celebrate safely. Make it a Christmas to remember for the right reasons.”

When it comes to making your home festive:

·      Never place candles near your Christmas tree or near materials that can catch light easily (e.g. curtains).

·      Keep candles, lighters and matches out of children’s reach.

·      Never leave burning candles unattended.

·      Never overload electrical sockets.

·      Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go out or go to bed.

·      Decorations can burn easily - so don’t attach them to lights or heaters.

·      Take time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours this Christmas as they are at greater risk from fire.

·      Make sure you, your family and visitors know how to escape in an emergency.

·      Check your Christmas tree lights carry the British Safety Standard sign before use”.

“Christmas is a time when we tend to let our hair down and indulge, be it in food or drink. We would never deter the public from getting into the festive spirit, however, we also insist on the following don’ts:”

·      Never drink and drive. If you know that you are going out and will be drinking arrange alternative forms of transport home. Also, remember that you may still be over the legal limit to drive the following morning.

·      Do NOT cook after having had a few drinks, why not get a takeaway instead?

·      If you are a smoker and have been out for a few, never smoke in bed as you may fall asleep with a lit cigarette in your hand”.

·      If you are planning on travelling during the festive period, please be mindful that you will need to adapt your driving to suit winter driving conditions. For safety messages specific to winter road safety please follow this link.
