Monday train chaos for Welshpool

27/02/2011 @ 05:29

Montgomeryshire will be without a train service on Monday following strike action called by the ASLEEF trade union which will wipe out Arriva Trains Wales services.

The action also cancelled trains on Sunday and will affect early morning trains on Tuesday with passengers advised to check before any travel.

The action has been called by the union which says Wales train drivers have been offered a lower pay deal than their English counterparts. No Arriva Trains Wales services will run anywhere in the country and there will not be any replacement bus services due to cost.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Passengers are advised to make alternative transport arrangements for Monday. Arriva Trains Wales will not arrange road transport for the affected dates. First Great Western, Cross County and Virgin Trains services will not be affected by this strike action.

“Arriva Trains Wales would like to apologise for the obvious inconvenience this will cause.”

For further details on trains running, please visit www.nationalrail.co.uk or call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950.

Below, we have teamed up with Arriva Trains Wales to answer your most commonly asked questions.

Why are drivers taking this action?
ASLEF, the train driver’s trade union is in dispute with the Company over pay and have announced a strike day and an overtime ban. We are disappointed with their decision, however are working to resolve the situation.

What services are provided on Monday?
There will be no Arriva Trains Wales services on these dates.

Will a replacement road transport replace cancelled trains?
No - we will not be able to source enough buses and coaches to meet demand and to provide an effective replacement service across our network. We run over 950 trains a day, which would translate into a like-for-like requirement for thousands of buses. Therefore we would not be able to provide alternative transport.

I have already booked a ticket - can I have a refund?
If you have booked to travel on one of the affected routes and no longer wish to travel, you can have a full refund and should seek a refund from where you purchased the ticket. Refunds must be applied for within the 7 days following the strike.

I have a season ticket - can I get a refund?
Compensation for season tickets will be covered under the Passengers Charter and will be dealt with in the normal way by extensions on renewal. Weekly Season ticket holders are entitled to one days refund and this should be processed on a refund form following expiry of the ticket.

Can I claim compensation for any disruption that I experience on the day?
Under the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and our Passenger’s Charter, we do not accept liability for delays caused by industrial action and so regrettably we can’t reimburse the cost of alternative travel arrangements or any other consequential losses.

Are other train operators working normally on these strike days?
Yes we understand that First Great Western, CrossCountry, Virgin Trains and London Midland will all be operating their planned services on the strike days. Our stations where other train operators call will be staffed as per the usual arrangements.
