Anger over graveyard sheep

19/12/2017 @ 11:23

Sheep have gained access to the Maesygwastad Cemetery, prompting angry family members of those buried there to call for their immediate removal.

Sheep were spotted grazing on the site over the weekend with some reporting that they had left droppings on the graves, as well as eaten some of the plants and flowers.

“It’s not nice to see sheep droppings over our loved ones’ graves,” said one reader. “The sheep are leaving quite a mess in the graveyard.”

Another resident pointed out that the sheep had damaged some of the commemorative pots, while there were more reports of them still being on site Monday.

Town Council clerk Robert Robinson said that he would look into it to see what could be done from their side, while a reader added that they had complained to Powis Estates who promised to take it up with the relevant farmer.

There’s been several issues with Welshpool’s graveyards over the past two years. Complaints about poor maintenance have been made previously, while the gates are now shut in the evenings at Maesygwastad due to people using it as an overnight car park.
