Welshpool motorists faced another manic Monday as the town’s one-way system’s catastrophic introduction reached new levels of frustration and confusion.
Parents taking their children to Maesydre for the start of term joined angry commuters in long lines of traffic after the re-closure of Mill Lane caught everyone by surprise, including the Town Council which announced only last night (Sunday) that it was now open.
Even Town Clerk Robert Robinson admitted he was not informed that Mill Lane would be shut but posted it on the council’s web site as soon as it was brought to his attention.
And our hotline was reaching meltdown by mid-morning as word spread of a closure to the Spar Car Park for two days from tomorrow (Tuesday) for resurfacing. It means motorists will need to find alternative parking.
There will also be further disruption caused by resurfacing work throughout the new route.
Mr Robinson said: “I have been informed that the car park is being white lined and will only be half closed and half open for two days, Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Resurfacing works are starting Tuesday and will also be done half and half to reduce congestion. There will be a single lane in Church Street for most of the week.”
The road works are scheduled to end by March 14 when the new Tesco store is expected to open.
