Rail disruption after train hits sheds

18/01/2018 @ 10:25

The storm that swept through the area overnight has also caused rail problems after a freight train struck two sheds that had blown onto the line.

The incident happened between Newtown and Welshpool, resulting in the service being halted and replacement buses operating between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury.

Overnight, the highest wind gust of 93mph (150km) was recorded near Capel Curig, Conwy, with local winds exceeding 60mph.

On the roads, a tree blocked Red Bank while another fallen tree in Leighton (pictured) has also caused morning problems.

PS Ash Brice tweeted with the picture that there were “lots of trees down this morning...take care. This tree at the Leighton estate in Welshpool is one of many we are dealing with”.

The Met Office had issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning and said winds could damage buildings and affect travel.
