As Tesco heralds the completion of its new multi-million pound Welshpool store,
mywelshpool has been told that Phase Two of the project has been shelved.
The store will open on March 14, and its manager has already been handed the keys with some of the 189 new employees hard at work stocking the shelves.
But with all systems go on the supermarket, the much heralded retail and jobs bonanza that was to accompany Tesco has been put on hold.
Only last month, our insider tipped us off that the four retail units had still not been taken up and it now looks like the developers have conceded defeat for now. Initially the units were expected to be ready in the summer.
Our insider told us: “All I can say is that work won’t start on them but you never know, it could change again next week. For now though there is nothing more than Tesco planned for Welshpool.”
Halfords, Argos and Next were all linked to the site and it is believed that negotiations will continue between developers and high street giants.
A Tesco spokesperson confirmed that work will not begin on the units: “There has been strong interest in the retail units and once contracts are in place, the construction programme will commence.”
Meanwhile, following increased rumours surrounding the its Newtown store, Tesco has today insisted that it will not be closing or selling there. For the full story visit
