Tesco’s £37m+ Welshpool price tag

04/03/2011 @ 01:04

New employees of Tesco have been told this week that the Welshpool development has a total price tag of £37 million, but the supermarket giant has added that it is “a lot more” than that!

The astonishing figure has been revealed to the 189 employees enjoying their induction and training before the store’s doors officially open on March 14.

They have also been told that the supermarket hopes to rake in at least £500,000 on its opening week alone, with a takings target of £300,000 on average per week after that.

The figures have blown away new employees with one telling us: “I was amazed. My eyes nearly popped out of my head. We have all heard that one in every eight pounds spent in the UK goes through Tesco and it looks like the same will happen in Welshpool based on these figures!”

The development cost represents a massive investment for the town and is believable when the rebuilding of the Livestock Market, the new one-way system and the giant supermarket and petrol station structures are all taken into the equation.

Last night a spokesperson for Tesco told us: “I can confirm that the total Welshpool investment is definitely certainly more than £37 million.”

Meanwhile, store manager Linda McGill has received the keys to the new store which signifies that the structural work to the store is complete.

“We are all really excited and cannot wait for opening day!” said Linda. “We hope that the residents of Welshpool and the surrounding areas will be pleased with the new store.”

Linda added: “My staff and I are looking forward to welcoming our customers into the new store and we hope that Tesco will become a key part of the local community.”

The store will offer three hours’ free parking and a petrol station and will open on March 14 at 8am. Its opening hours after that will be 6am on Monday for 24 hours until midnight Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
