Snow inspires sisters’ homeless help

Coming home to a warm house after a day's sledging in the recent snow has inspired a pair of Welshpool sisters to launch a bid to help the homeless.

Hope, nine, and Leyla Williams, six, turned their attentions to the homeless during the perishing cold snap that swept the country earlier this month.

And now they have set themselves an ambitious target to collect a number of vital items for the Shrewsbury Ark, a safe haven for the homeless and vulnerable in the area.

“This idea came from a conversation about how lucky we are by coming home to a warm house and hot food after sledging, as it was so cold,” said the girls’ father, David.

“The girls started thinking about how cold and lonely the homeless people are and wanted to do something about it.

“In the past, they have met homeless people and bought them hot drinks and food while we been out and about. They wanted to make the homeless feel that they are not forgotten.”

The sisters have created and distributed flyers to their friends at school, and are now widening their appeal for people to help.

“We are looking for clothes, sleeping bags and toiletries etc, either to be passed on, or to be sold in the Ark charity shop,” the girls stated. “The Ark also uses lots of essentials on a daily basis such as tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits. So we have set a challenge to collect the minimum of several items by March 19.

“We want to get: Tea bags, 50 packs; Coffee, 50 jars; Sugar, 50 bags; Biscuits, 100 packets; Pot noodles, 100 pots.”

You can drop off donations at 17 Acorn Rise, Welshpool, or contact Dave on 0777 2258266.
