Welshpool’s Tuesday Flood Conference

07/03/2011 @ 03:52

Following one of the worst winters in living memory, members of the public are invited to attend an event about flooding tomorrow (Tuesday).

Powys County Council is partnering with Environment Agency Wales to host an awareness raising event in the Corn Exchange, Welshpool from 1-8pm.

Officers from the Agency’s ‘Flood Awareness Wales’ campaign will be on hand to advise local people about the risk to their area, and to provide information and tips on practical steps to take now to help protect their property for the future.

Powys County Council will be exhibiting details of a proposed scheme to reduce the risk of flooding in Welshpool. The scheme is grant aided by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Union, with work programmed to commence this summer.

The flood awareness event in Welshpool will coincide with Exercise Watermark - the largest emergency exercise ever undertaken in the UK. Being planned by the Environment Agency in England and Wales on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the exercise is designed to test the country’s preparedness to respond to catastrophic flooding. It consists of a range of flood scenarios run over five days (March 7-11).
