Welshpool firefighters save chippie and rescue residents

Quick thinking Welshpool firemen saved an Aberystwyth chippie from burning down and rescued the inhabitants early this morning.

Crew Manager Matt Roberts and Firefighter Ben Astley (pictured) were on their way to a Swift Water Rescue training day in Llandysul when they stopped off for a break in Aberystwyth at 7.15am.

The pair spotted a blaze in the Express Fish & Chip Shops and jumped into action, gaining entry to the premises and rescuing two residents. Firefighter Astley led the pair out of the smoke-filled shop while Crew Manager Roberts tackled the blaze, using a wet chemical fire extinguisher.

Firefighter Astley called 999 to mobilise an Aberystwyth fire crew who arrived to ensure the shop and location was made safe.

“We have no doubt that the actions of both our fire fighters saved the lives of those involved today,” said a spokesman.
