It’s that time of year again when Monty’s Brewery, based in Montgomery, launch their summer brew ‘Desert Rats’, with a hero from World War II pouring the first pint.

The dry blonde session ale is ideal for the summer months, and will be launched on June 6 at Monty’s Brewery Visitor Centre.

Last year, General Montgomery’s grandson Henry Montgomery pulled the first pint and this time around Arthur William George Pigeon, aged 97, will have the honour. Arthur is ex Royal Navy and was on the HMS Bulolo on D-Day.

For every pint poured, Monty’s Brewery donates 5p to SSAFA, the armed forces charity formally known as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association. This year Monty’s has again produced a limited number of bottles due to the success last year.

Russ Honeyman, commercial director for Monty’s Brewery, said: “We always look forward to bringing out Desert Rats. It has a strong following and of course as an Ex RAF person myself, it is great to donate to this worthwhile charity. All ages of people are helped by SSAFA from service personnel leaving now to the older generation who served for us in the past.”

As an extra special treat, 16 kegs have been produced this year and these will be served at the Taste of London event from June 13-17 in Regents Park, London.

Monty’s Brewery will brew Desert Rats through to the end of August.
