Prepare to be Tesco’ised

13/03/2011 @ 09:43

There is a new word being lined up for the Welshpool Dictionary, 2011 Edition – ‘Tesco-ised’.

But the wordsmiths of Welshpool will only decide this week as to what its definition should be!

History will be made tomorrow when the town’s new £37 million store opens for business at 8am with an official ‘ribbon cutting’ at 10am featuring the Town Mayor.

And despite a rocky road towards finally opening its doors, the supermarket giant believes the store will speak for itself with a Tesco that will win over the local population.

“The store is ready and our excellent employees are ready. We are looking forward to serving Welshpool and the surrounding area,” said store manager, Linda McGill (below, right).

The harsh winter weather has delayed the store’s opening date at least twice and the bumpy introduction of the one-way system has been blamed by many on Tesco but Miss McGill was quick to clarify some facts.

“The one-way system was agreed in 1995, long before Tesco had come along. We’ve just implemented a system which has been a long time in the pipeline,” she explained.

And the bubbly boss from Northop Hall, who has been with the company since starting as a 16 year-old cashier 23 years ago, says it’s now all systems go for tomorrow.

“All of our staff has been trained up and what we call ‘Tesco’ised’ in readiness for the launch. All I can say to the people of the Welshpool and the surrounding area is to come down and take a look for yourself. This is a new-look Tesco store, the sort of which you will only find at one other location in Britain. It looks amazing.

“We did our extensive customer research to find out what the local population wanted from their new Tesco store and we have created a one-stop shop. We will deliver to Welshpool. We are a big store but with the service of a corner shop.”

Welshpool Tesco will be open 24 hours a day from 6am on Mondays with the exception of Sunday when the store will open from 10-4pm after closing the night before at midnight. The only thing that won’t be served around the clock is alcohol which stops at midnight every day.

YOUR INVITE: The public is invited to attend the grand opening of Tesco at 10am Monday.
