Concerns over canal water contamination

09/06/2018 @ 09:01

There are concerns over the state of the water in the Montgomery Canal to the east of Welshpool after an oily sheen appeared on its surface over the spring.

One reader alerted us to the condition of the water (pictured), saying it was “thoughtlessly destroying nature” and while we are awaiting official information from the Canal & River Trust as to what’s caused it, they have told us that they are aware of the issue.

Millions of pounds are being spent to link the Montgomery Canal to rest of the British Canal Network, a move that is expected to provide a massive touristic boost to Montgomeryshire. Volunteers have also been doing a tremendous job in maintaining the canal as a glorious local beauty spot.

But there are concerns that the future influx of barges on the waterway could impact on the local plant and wildlife species that have settled on the canal.

While we await an official statement from the Canal & River Trust, their Customer Services told us: “The local team have advised they were made aware of the issue in May and have been monitoring it. They confirmed they will act if it continues.”
