School officials have responded to concerns after a rough sleeper with a sex offence conviction was found settling in for the night at the Maesydre school site last month.

Alexander Macura, 64, who gave his address as a caravan park in Lancashire, was prohibited from entering a school premises by a risk of sexual harm order, but broke into the school telling police after being apprehended that he was looking for somewhere to sleep for the night.

He was found by a classroom assistant who was responding to the alarm going off on a Friday night, and she called 999.

The incident sparked concerns from parents and carers prompting Powys County Council to issue a statement.

In it they said that the incident happened out of hours and that the damage caused by the break-in had been fixed and the school was secure. It confirmed that no items had been removed from the premises.

“All pupil data and records are locked in filing cabinets which are locked in the school office,” the statement read. “There was no evidence to suggest that the intruder had accessed any other areas of the school.”

It added that the school had responded with “robust action” to ensure the safety and security of both staff and pupils.
