The man accused of murdering well known Welshpool man Charlie Birch in June and seriously injuring another is expected to start his murder trial today.

Charlie, 39, was struck by a car being driven by the suspect following an alleged earlier altercation at a bar in Paphos, where father-of-two Charlie was enjoying a family holiday.

Another Welshpool man, Will Pritchard, 32, was injured in the incident but is thankfully on the road to recovery.

A 23-year-old woman was also arrested but released without charge, with the man claiming it was an accident and denying the charges.

Police said a car which was removed from Ayios Georghios harbour had been ditched to “dispose of incriminating evidence”.

Following Charlie’s tragic death, there was a huge outpouring of grief and support for the family, and he was laid to rest following one of the town’s biggest funerals.

There is no indication, at this time, as to how long the trial is expected to last.
