‘Aerials’ rent to pay for broken clock

The Town Hall clock tower has courted plenty of controversy this summer, but the ‘new look’ is starting to pay its own way.

Following the controversial erection of communications aerials on the four clock faces of our iconic building earlier this summer, one of the clocks has been stuck on 6pm.

The ageing time piece has endured several problems over the past decade and it seems that this latest issue will cost a few quid to fix.

But the latest Council Services Committee meeting has recommended to full council that repairs, at a cost of £874, should come out of the rental money paid by the communications company.

“The central ratchet has worn and is now not turning the minute hand,” a Committee spokesperson told us. “The estimate for the repairs has been gained in the sum of £874."

The Committee recommends that the works proceed with the money being taken from part of the rent received for the newly installed aerials.

“Subject to Council approval, the clock face should be up and working by the end of September,” he added.
