A spiky issue irks Montgomery

New security measures at Montgomery Castle to deter anti-social behavour have not gone down well with residents.

Town Crier, Susan Blower, described the reasoning for spikes being placed onto an entry gate as “absolute tosh” and called for common sense to prevail.

The Welsh Government, who manage the site through its protected buildings arm, Cadw, explained their appearance by saying: “Regrettably, a new gate and the security features have been deemed necessary at the castle following recent incidents of anti-social behaviour after-hours.”

But Susan said this was “absolute tosh to be frank” and explained that some visitors and runners have entered the area legitimately and later returned to find the spiked gate closed.

“Youngsters may have gathered up there but could get out down through the footpaths anyway,” she told us. “All rather like a storm in a tea cup and very sad. It is quite a dangerous action they have taken with no printed public safety message.”

Montgomery Castle is one of our most visited local attractions and after Simon Bedford posted this picture up, many people were angry that the new security measure would be closed so early despite the light evenings.

“A storm has erupted and hopefully public pressure will get Cadw to remove the spikes,” added Susan.
