Welshpool shortlisted for Great British High Street Awards

17/09/2018 @ 09:48

Following its summer appearance on The One Show, Welshpool High Street has been shortlisted for this year’s Great British High Street Awards 2018, sponsored by Visa.

The town has been shortlisted in the Champion category, which aims to find the UK’s best high street. After a rigorous selection process, Welshpool High Street was chosen by an independent judging panel as one of 26 streets to be shortlisted for the award.

And MyWelshpool has been mentioned as one of the reasons as to why the town has caught the attention of the judges!

The shortlisted high streets will now battle it out in a public vote, which accounts for 30 per cent of the final scoring, and will then have the chance to impress an expert judging panel as they seek to be crowned Britain’s best.

The winning entries for both the Champion and Rising Star categories will be announced on November 15 at an awards ceremony in London.

The bid by Welshpool Town Council followed research commissioned by Visa, which revealed promising signs of renewed confidence in the country’s high streets despite a challenging retail environment.

High Streets Minister, Jake Berry MP, said: “Congratulations to Welshpool High Street on being shortlisted as one of the UK’s best high streets in this year’s Great British High Street Awards.

“The awards celebrate the great work that is being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets and the quality of entries this year has been outstanding.

“Over the next six weeks Welshpool High Street has the chance to impress an expert judging panel as they also battle it out in a public vote for the title of Britain’s best high street.”

“This is a great opportunity to show your support for the hard work going on in Welshpool High Street so get voting!”

Why Welshpool made the shortlist…

“Welshpool holds many events, including a transport festival and a music festival. Groups of shops work together to provide entertainment and activities at the Winter Festival. Through a litter challenge scheme, each local shop is encouraged to look after its section of pavement and many businesses organise litter picks around the high street. To make Welshpool accessible to everybody, all public toilets have disabled facilities and street furniture has yellow banding for the visually impaired. Welshpool has a tourism website for visitors alongside a local news website and is active in promoting the town through social media channels.”
