Sharp drop in Powys recycling rates

26/10/2018 @ 11:49

Local residents have recycled nearly 5% less rubbish over the past year, worrying figures have revealed.

The latest recycling performance data, reported by the Local Democracy Reporting team, confirms 17 of the 22 local councils in Wales have recorded a drop in rates, with Powys one of the poorest performers at 60.4%, down -4.8% from the previous year.

While the news is alarming, the man responsible for the county’s recycling said there were mitigating factors.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste, said: “It is disappointing that our recycling rate has decreased for 2017/18. However, the overall recycling rate for Wales fell with 17 out of the 22 councils in Wales seeing a decrease.

“It is due to a combination of complex factors including changes to the markets and how wood recycling is calculated at our household waste recycling centres.

“We are also currently having to landfill all our residual waste due to problems with providing Refuse Derived Fuel for Energy from Waste facilities.”

However, he has issued a rallying call for households not to suffer from recycling fatigue and to continue to do their bit.

“There has been a slight drop in material collected at the kerbside so we would ask that residents make sure that they do recycle wherever they can. We will be stepping up our awareness and enforcement campaigns so that we can help residents to sort and recycle their waste.”

All Welsh councils will be expected to recycle at least 64%, before the 70% target is introduced in 2024-25. By 2050, the Welsh Government is aiming for no waste at all ending up in landfill.
