Views sought on £35 green waste service

01/11/2018 @ 09:36

It was revealed last month that householders could benefit from a new garden waste kerbside collection service, but it would cost £35 a year for the privilege.

Powys County Council wants to offer the service at £35 a year, instead of householders having to take their grass cuttings and the like to community green waste facilities which could be closed, saving them £280,000 a year. The Household Waste Recycling Centre operated by Potters would not be affected.

The community facilities are unsupervised and have been misused with all household and commercial waste being dumped.

Now households are being asked for their views on how a garden waste collection service could be implemented.

The month-long consultation will start today with the council looking to gauge how much interest there would be for this new service. The consultation will ask views on the frequency of collection, container types, the cost and the payment options that people may prefer.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste, said: “A green garden waste collection service would be similar to the kerbside collection householders currently get for glass, plastics and paper but it would be a service that households would pay for so your organic garden waste such as leaves, hedge and grass cuttings is taken away for you.

“Garden waste collections are popular in many other areas and allow residents to recycle with ease and without the need to use their own vehicles to transport the green waste themselves.

“We would encourage residents to take part in this consultation so that their views can help shape how the service is implemented.”

The consultation will be loaded up today here. A paper copy is available from the library.

It will close on December 2.
