Welshpool Livestock Sales report on highly successful Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.
OTMS (47)
A larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £992.80 (136ppkg) for a Salers x OTM weighing in at 730kg from TT Jones & Son, Glyn Farm. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £940.10 (119ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 790kg from S Watkin, Mount Nebo. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1667.25 (195ppkg) for a British Blue x heifer weighing 855kg from H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym. A under 48 month steer weighing 705kg from JM & C Williams, Upper Pentre reached £916.50 (130ppkg).
Averages of the day were as follows:
OTM Cows (30) 96.34ppkg / £642.08.
Cows 48-72 Months (3) 102.09ppkg / £664.61.
Heifers Under 48 months (12) 148.91ppkg / £1023.54.
Steers Under 72 months (1) 130ppkg / £916.50.
Overall Average 112.25ppkg.

FAT CATTLE
The Fat cattle show was kindly sponsored by For Farmers and Briarwood Products Ltd and was judged by Mr. John Stephenson and the Champion title was awarded to JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen.
The Limousin heifer, that was also 1st prize Heifer weighed 525kg and made 244ppkg realising £1680 was bought by A Davies Butchers, Berriew. The reserve Champion title also went to JM & SM Rowlands for a Limousin steer weighing 635kg selling for 244ppkg to Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Welshpool. Many thanks go to the judge and vendors on the day for their support.
Overall average of the day was 222.43ppkg.

A larger number of lambs forward sold to an average of 179.38ppkg with a top price of 265ppkg for the Champion pen of lambs weighing 49kg lambs making £130. Plenty of other show and commercial lambs sold to above 200ppkg as the trade for these better quality lambs continues to strenghten. Overall trade would be up for all weights and grades with most demand for the better meated lambs and also for the smaller, better quality store lambs with plenty of these going back round for further finishing. Light weight (28-32kg Welsh Lambs) also found a stronger trade throughout.

Mediums (1964) to 209ppkg from DH Morgan, Nantgwynne and D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Others to 207ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Average of 182.30ppkg.
Heavies (868) to 265ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 191ppkg from D Jones, Graig Fach. Average of 170.68ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1830)
An entry of 1758 ewes achieved an average of £44.17. This was up £5 on last weeks. Overall a much stronger trade compared to last week across the board. All types of ewes were in demand with a good show of buyers ringside. Ewes peaked at £125 presented by WRP Jones, Pant. Our winner of the annual Christmas Fatstock highest pen of 5 of more cull ewes went to TM & G Rees & Son, Cefngwyddil, travelling that extra mile to reap the rewards. On the whole a strong trade was present a reflection of reduced numbers over the past few weeks.

STORE LAMBS (1100)
A similar entry to last week with 1100 on offer again with a large entry of hill bred sorts selling to a slightly improved trade as more men are continually looking for lambs.
Tup lambs again sold very well peaking at £72 twice – first from Mrs J Morgan, Lower Brynbedw and second from BL Hamer, Upper Brithdir. Large numbers of tup lambs sold between £60 and £66.
Mixed and clean lambs reached £69.50 for 30 Texel x from P Andrew, Llanoddian Ganol with others to £68 from GW Jones, Henfryn. Again strong farming lambs were £60 plus.
Ewe lambs peaked to £66 for Mules from AM Jones, Middle Farm with Texels to £63 from R & A Davies, Bronyvastre.
Wether lambs hit £63 for Welsh lambs from JG Jones, Cefn Brith with others to £58 from G Hamer & Son.

IN CALF HEIFERS
An entry of 70 Cows & calves and in calf heifers met with a decent trade with plenty of people around the ring.
The sale commenced with some quality In calf heifers from Ryan Morris, Maestanyglwden which were all either pure Limousin or British Blue x Limousin due in March/April and in calf to the easy calving stock bull Llwynybrain Lens, or AI sexed semen. Topping the trade was a British Blue x January 2017 born heifer which sold to £2200. With others at £2000 and £1800. Leading the Limousin in calf heifers was a November 2016 born heifer selling for £1900. Overall they averaged £1762.
Presented by JE & JT Evans & Son were 11 Limousin x British Blue x 1st calvers with Limousin x calves at foot which sold to a top of £2020, with three others at £2000. Overall they averaged £1940.
RJ Hughes & Co, Argoed sold 21 British Blue x cows with mostly July born Limousin x calves at foot with the cows due again next April/May. Topping their trade was a 1st calver with a steer calf which made £1820. With other outfits at £1600, £1520, £1500 (2), £1380 and £1400. Overall they averaged £1333.
The leading price of £2800 was achieved by WI Jones & Sons, Cilcwm for a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin x heifer calf. At £2150 was a Limousin x 1st calver with a bull calf. Other outfits sold to £2000, £1920 (2) and £1820.
Presented by G & A Powell, Glanmeheli was 12 Pedigree in calf Salers heifers all in calf to a Salers bull. Topping the trade at £2280 was Glanmeheli Menna, a May 2017 born heifer due in April 19 to Glynhall Ian. Glanmeheli Myrthyr made £1920. Two autumn 2016 born heifers due in February, Glanmeheli Lottie and Glanmeheli Louise sold for £1850. Overall the 12 heifers averaged £1820.
A Purebred stock bull from H & S Watkins, Cammen Uchaf sired by Lodge Hamlett sold for £2000.
