Sports Awards axed

The Montgomeryshire Sports Awards are set to be axed after cash-strapped Powys County Council said it is pulling the plug on funding.

Sport Powys run the annual Awards evening to recognise and reward the achievements of local athletes and teams, and to mark the contribution made to local sport by coaches, volunteers and sports leaders. It is also thought the the Brecon and Radnor Awards have also gone.

But with a budget hole of £14 million needing to be plugged, the Council said the Awards’ final whistle has been blown.

“The council will not be organising the Montgomeryshire Sports Awards due to the budgetary pressures that it faces,” a spokesperson said.

The event has recognised some of our most prominent achievers over the past decade and last year’s Montgomeryshire Sports Personality of the Year was Welsh marathon star, Andy Davies. Previous winners include Welshpool athlete, Adele Nicoll (pictured).
