Town’s shock as vicar resigns

02/04/2011 @ 07:17

Parishioners attending services at St Mary’s on Sunday will be told that the Rev. Canon Bill Rowell has quit.

Uncertainty surrounds just why the Rev. Rowell, who has been a popular vicar, has resigned but he is believed to have been suffering from ill health over recent months.

Mywelshpool believes that the vicar informed his boss, the Rt. Revd Dr Gregory Cameron, Bishop of Diocese of St Asaph, on Wednesday of his decision, but it was only yesterday (Friday) that news filtered through to the town.

“It is very sad news as he was a wonderful vicar,” said one lady who asked not to be named. “He has done excellent work for the area and had so many things lined up to do in the coming months. He is going to be missed.”

A note informing parishioners of his resignation has been posted on the Vicarage door and a statement will be read out to the congregation on Sunday confirming the news.

Mywelshpool contacted the Montgomeryshire Arch Deacon but The Venerable John Thelwell decided not to comment until the Sunday statement had been read out at St. Mary’s.
