Welshpool fraudster set for jail

A Welshpool man who convinced a retired couple to invest their life savings into a bogus investment company could be jailed tomorrow (Tuesday).

 

Gary Philip Roberts, 41, of Welshpool, pleaded guilty to fraud at Brecon Magistrates Court, and was remanded in custody for sentencing.

 

The court heard that Roberts had targeted the couple and later befriended them.

 

A police spokesperson said: “He built up trust over time and offered to invest their life savings in a fictitious financial institution. Mr Roberts went to extraordinary lengths to appear genuine even producing fake bank statements showing the investment – and fraudulently obtained a significant amount of money from his vulnerable victims.”
